On 7 June 2023, MP for Marang and leader of PAS, Hadi Awang in his continuation of pro-Malay rhetoric made comments on how the country’s leadership should remain in the hands of the majority ethnic group. He claims that people from other ethnicities in the country should be grateful for their citizenship and that supposedly these rights would not have been accorded in other nations—-something that is groundless—-many nations all over the world in their policies grant citizenship regardless of one's ethnicity or religion.
He further said that the majority has been tolerant enough to have supposedly allowed for non-muslims to hold positions in government at various levels. Pertaining to the unity government, he made claims that it is unfit to govern on the basis that it is dominated by minorities—another baseless claim in his growing arsenal.
Hadi Awang’s rhetoric is rooted in supremacism and cultural hegemony with the intention of upholding the existing status quo with political power being held by the majority race. His stance perpetuates marginalisation of minorities and relegates them as second class citizens—-which contravene the spirit of pluralistic, democratic, Malaysia and the provisions for equality in the Constitution.
