On 14 December 2023, MP for Machang, Wan Ahmad Fayhsal called for a constitutional amendment that would only allow for those from the Malay community to become the prime minister, the head of government in the country following comments made by former MP Lim Kit Siang during an engagement session with Malaysian students in the UK where he said that the federal constitution does not inhibit those who are not from the Malay community to become Prime Minister.
Wan Ahmad Fayhsal further justifies his position by saying that this move would allow the government to recuperate lost support from the Malay community and would enable greater stability within the government.
The premise that the head of government should be limited to someone from a specific ethnicity and religion, is deeply disturbing and detrimental especially to multicultural, multiethnic, multifaith Malaysia. Such measures would result in the marginalisation of minority communities in the country, induce hostility, and sow hatred. Advocacy on this measure made by Wan Fayshal, is meant to garner political support by emphasising the status quo of the majority and that of his own ethnicity and religion.
